Target Architecture from QLIKView to QLIK Sense

Before and After

4 Phases

Phase 1: Qlik Sense Server Initialization

  • Create the Qlik Sense server in parallel.
  • Leave the QlikView server and its load processes intact and operational.
  • End users are able to use their favorite apps without disruption.
  • Migrate or build your high-priority apps on Qlik Sense.
  • Set the QlikView loads to write out a second set of QVDs to the Qlik Sense server, across the network share, to leverage existing ETL processes.

Phase 2: QlikView App Migration

  • Leave the QlikView server and its load processes intact and operational.
  • End users are able to use their favorite apps without disruption.
  • Migrate your remaining QlikView apps to Qlik Sense.
  • Most QlikView features can be replicated in Qlik Sense.
  • HiCo trueChart and menuBar packages bring back many of the remaining lost features, and introduce new capabilities.
  • Depending on the complexity of the QlikView apps, this is likely to be the most time-intensive phase.

Phase 3: Migration QlikView Loaders

  • Leave the QlikView server and its load processes intact and operational.
  • End users are able to use their favorite apps without disruption.
  • Move the QlikView loader apps to Qlik Sense.
  • Loader migration is quick, because Qlik Sense syntax is 95% similar to QlikView.
  • QVDs can be either loaded fresh on Qlik Sense server, or copied over from QlikView.  (Recommend fresh reloads to fully test)
  • Both servers can run in parallel indefinitely, as the Qlik Sense instance and all load processes are thoroughly tested.

Phase 4: Cutover to Qlik Sense

  • Note:  Cutover is optional, and many of our clients opt to use and maintain both platforms in parallel.
  • At a determined date, turn off the QlikView server, and operate fully on the Qlik Sense server.

USE CASE

Migrate QlikView to Qlik Sense

"Efficiency, accuracy, and speed have increased dramatically throughout the organization, and a full governance structure has enforced a single version of the truth across our BI platform. Life is good."

A happy QlikView client had been following Qlik Sense’s evolution and ruled it as now mature enough to make the switch. The catalyst was their highly- mobile executives’ increasing need to access their dashboards and metrics on the go. QlikView was fine, but not as conducive for touchscreen use or as adaptive to the variety of mobile resolutions.

Phase 1: We stood up a Qlik Sense pilot server and built them a top-down suite of mobile apps. The executives were overjoyed by the new capabilities, the speed of development, and by our leveraging existing QlikView business logic and data files. Power Users embraced doing ad hoc development from any device with a web browser. The desk-based users were relieved that their trusty apps still worked without any interruption. And, the sysadmins were intrigued by Qlik Sense‘s consolidated, streamlined control and governance structure.

Phase 2: Seizing on the opportunity for spring cleaning, we consolidated the single-context QlikView apps into v2.0 cross-functional apps, simply converted the well-designed apps, and completely re-engineered the remaining apps to re-align with new features and current reporting needs. Throughout the process, the QlikView environment was untouched, and continued to reload and function as usual. We then converted the remaining QlikView licenses to Qlik Sense and trained the rest of the user base.

Phase 3: Script conversion was fast, as much of the QV script code and logic was already compatible with Qlik Sense, and the new centralized Data Connections enhanced standardization. With the time saved, we cleaned out old code, enforced standards, and optimized performance.

Phase 4: Migrated data loads were thoroughly tested and certified, and usage logs showed a faster than expected adoption rate across the user base. When, the day came to shut down the QlikView server, the user base collectively shrugged. They had already moved on.
